About This Game

Werewolf (also known as Mafia) is one of the original social deduction games, dating back to the 1980s. The setup is classic: a village is plagued by werewolves hiding among the villagers. During the night phase, werewolves secretly choose a villager to eliminate. During the day phase, all surviving players debate who the werewolves might be and vote to execute a suspect. The game continues until either all werewolves are eliminated or they equal the remaining villagers.

Online Werewolf platforms have made this traditionally in-person game accessible to remote players. Digital versions handle the night phase automatically (no need for a narrator), assign special roles with unique abilities (Seer, Doctor, Hunter, Witch), and manage the voting process cleanly. This removes the logistical challenges of physical Werewolf while preserving the core experience: passionate debates, defensive lies, and the electric moment when a werewolf is caught or an innocent is wrongly executed.

The game is at its best with 8-16 players, where there are enough suspects to create genuine confusion and enough special roles to generate information and power plays. Multiple free platforms offer Werewolf with various rule sets and role options. The social deduction genre exists because of Werewolf, and despite decades of competitors, the original format remains one of the most engaging multiplayer experiences you can have.

How to Play

  1. Join a game

Enter a Werewolf lobby online. The game needs at least 6 players, with 10-16 being optimal.

  2. Receive your role

You are secretly assigned a role: Villager, Werewolf, Seer, Doctor, or another special role depending on the game setup.

  3. Night phase

Werewolves secretly choose a victim. Special roles (Seer, Doctor) use their abilities. All of this is handled automatically online.

  4. Day phase

The village learns who was eliminated overnight. Everyone debates, shares suspicions, and defends themselves.

  5. Vote to execute

Players vote on who to execute. If a werewolf is caught, the village is safer. If an innocent dies, the werewolves grow stronger.
