About This Game

Secret Hitler is a social deduction game that layers political strategy on top of hidden roles. Players are divided into Liberals and Fascists, with one Fascist secretly designated as Hitler. The Liberals win by passing five liberal policies or assassinating Hitler. The Fascists win by passing six fascist policies or electing Hitler as Chancellor after three fascist policies have already passed.

The game's genius lies in its policy mechanic. Each round, the elected President draws three policy tiles, discards one secretly, and passes two to the elected Chancellor, who discards another and enacts the remaining one. This creates plausible deniability — if a fascist policy is enacted, was it because the deck was unlucky, or did the President or Chancellor deliberately choose it? This ambiguity fuels incredible debates and accusations.

As fascist policies are enacted, the President gains special powers: investigating a player's loyalty, choosing the next Presidential candidate, or even executing a player. These powers create dramatic moments and force critical decisions. The game was designed by Max Temkin (co-creator of Cards Against Humanity) and is published under a Creative Commons license, which is why free online versions exist. secrethitler.io offers a polished browser experience. For groups that enjoy political maneuvering and moral flexibility, Secret Hitler delivers unmatched tension.

How to Play

  1. Assign roles

Players are secretly dealt Liberal or Fascist party memberships. One Fascist is also designated as Hitler.

  2. Elect a government

The President nominates a Chancellor. All players vote to approve or reject the government.

  3. Enact a policy

If approved, the President draws 3 policy tiles, discards 1, and passes 2 to the Chancellor who discards 1 and enacts the last.

  4. Use presidential powers

Certain fascist policies grant the President powers: investigate loyalty, peek at policies, choose the next President, or execute a player.

  5. Win for your team

Liberals win by passing 5 liberal policies or executing Hitler. Fascists win by passing 6 fascist policies or electing Hitler as Chancellor.
