Codenames Board Game Online
The hit team word game now playable free online. Give clues, guess words, and avoid the assassin in this perfect party board game adaptation.

About This Game
Codenames deserves a spot in the board games category just as much as in word games — it is, at its core, a board game that uses words as its medium. Two teams compete to identify their secret agents from a shared board of 25 word cards. Each team has a Spymaster who sees a key showing which words belong to each team, and must give one-word clues that relate to as many of their team's words as possible.
The board game adaptation online at codenames.game is one of the best free implementations of any tabletop game. It supports full team play with separate Spymaster and Guesser views, custom room creation via shareable links, and all the rules of the physical game including the dreaded Assassin card that causes instant loss. The digital version actually improves on the tabletop experience in one key way: Spymasters can see the key on their own screen instead of awkwardly sharing a tiny card under the table.
Codenames has won the Spiel des Jahres (Germany's prestigious Game of the Year award) and is consistently ranked among the top party games worldwide. Its genius lies in creating moments of brilliant connection ("Ocean, 3" — and your team nails all three!) and hilarious miscommunication. The skill ceiling is surprisingly high for Spymasters, making it endlessly replayable.
How to Play
Form two teams
Split into two teams. Each team picks one player as their Spymaster.
Set up the board
The game displays 25 word cards. Spymasters see a secret key showing which words belong to each team.
Give one-word clues
Spymasters take turns giving a one-word clue and a number indicating how many words relate to that clue.
Guess carefully
Team members discuss and select words. Correct guesses reveal the team color. Wrong guesses end the turn or hit the Assassin.
Find all your agents first
The first team to correctly identify all their agents wins.
Tips & Strategy
- Spymasters should start with connections they are most confident about.
- Guessers should always use all available clues from previous rounds when making decisions.
- Avoid giving clues that could also point to the Assassin — no point advantage is worth the risk.
- Communication between guessers is key. Talk through your reasoning before committing.
