Codenames Online
Give one-word clues to help your team guess secret words on the board. Codenames Online is the beloved party game of spymasters and spies.

About This Game
Codenames is one of the best party games ever designed, and its free online version makes it accessible to anyone with a browser. Two teams compete to identify their agents (words) on a shared board of 25 words. Each team has a Spymaster who can see which words belong to their team and must give one-word clues to guide their teammates — but the clue must relate to multiple words to be effective.
The brilliance of Codenames lies in its asymmetry. Spymasters agonize over finding the perfect single word that connects "BEACH," "CASTLE," and "SAND" without also pointing to the opposing team's words or, worse, the instant-loss Assassin card. Meanwhile, guessers must interpret clues that are often hilariously ambiguous. "Ocean, 3" — does that mean BEACH, WAVE, and SALT... or is FISH also in play?
The free online version at codenames.game supports custom rooms with invite links, making it ideal for remote play over Zoom or Discord. There is also a Codenames Duet mode for cooperative two-player sessions. The rules take about two minutes to learn, games last 15-20 minutes, and the skill ceiling is surprisingly high — experienced Spymasters develop an almost telepathic connection with their teams. It is a must-play for any game night.
How to Play

Split into two teams
Players divide into two teams. Each team selects a Spymaster who will give the clues.
Spymasters give one-word clues
The Spymaster says a single word and a number (e.g., "Ocean, 3") indicating how many board words relate to that clue.
Teams guess words
The team discusses and taps words on the board. Correct guesses are revealed in the team color. Wrong guesses end the turn or trigger penalties.
Win by finding all your agents
The first team to correctly identify all their words wins. But beware the Assassin word — guessing it means instant loss.
Tips & Strategy
- As Spymaster, avoid clues that also connect to the Assassin word — the risk is never worth it.
- As a guesser, always discuss with your team before tapping. Group consensus catches errors.
- Start with safe two-word clues rather than going for ambitious four-word connections early.
- Pay attention to what words the opposing Spymaster seems to be avoiding — it can reveal information.
- Codenames Duet (co-op mode) is an excellent date-night option for two players.
