Backgammon Online
One of the oldest board games in history, now playable online for free. Backgammon combines dice luck with deep positional strategy in a timeless format.

About This Game
Backgammon is over 5,000 years old and has survived every era of human civilization for good reason — it is a brilliantly balanced mix of luck and skill. Two players move their 15 pieces around the board according to dice rolls, racing to be the first to "bear off" (remove) all pieces from the board. The doubling cube adds a gambling-style dimension where players can raise the stakes mid-game.
The strategic depth of backgammon surprises newcomers. While dice determine your available moves, choosing which pieces to move, when to leave blots (vulnerable single pieces), and how to set up defensive primes requires serious thought. Good players win more often than bad players despite the luck element, and the game rewards both aggressive and defensive styles depending on the position.
Online backgammon platforms offer rated matchmaking, AI opponents at various levels, and the ability to play at your own pace or in real-time. The game is particularly well-suited to digital play because setup is instant, dice rolls are automated, and illegal moves are prevented by the system. For strategy game fans who enjoy the interplay of calculation and risk-taking, backgammon offers a uniquely satisfying experience that has stood the test of millennia.
How to Play
Understand the board
The board has 24 triangular points. Each player's 15 pieces start in a specific arrangement and must move in opposite directions.
Roll dice and move
Roll two dice and move your pieces forward by the amounts shown. You can split the dice between two pieces or move one piece by both amounts.
Hit opponent blots
Landing on a point with a single opponent piece sends it to the bar. That piece must re-enter before the opponent can make other moves.
Bear off your pieces
Once all your pieces are in your home board (last six points), start removing them by rolling the corresponding numbers.
Win the race
The first player to bear off all 15 pieces wins. The doubling cube can increase stakes throughout the game.
Tips & Strategy
- In the opening, prioritize securing your 5-point and bar-point — they form the backbone of strong positions.
- Avoid leaving blots in your opponent's home board where they are most vulnerable.
- Learn when to play safe versus when to take risks — this judgment is the core of backgammon skill.
- The doubling cube is powerful. Offer a double when you have a clear advantage; accept only when you have at least 25% winning chances.
