Hearts Online
Play the classic trick-taking card game Hearts against friends or AI opponents. Avoid taking hearts and the dreaded Queen of Spades to win.

About This Game
Hearts is one of the great trick-taking card games, and playing it online strips away the need to find three other people, a deck of cards, and a table. The rules are straightforward but strategically rich: players take turns playing one card per trick, and you want to avoid taking any hearts (worth one penalty point each) or the Queen of Spades (worth 13 penalty points). The player with the fewest points when someone hits 100 wins.
The game's signature mechanic is "shooting the moon" — if you manage to take ALL the hearts AND the Queen of Spades in one hand, every other player gets 26 penalty points instead. This high-risk, high-reward gambit adds a constant undercurrent of tension. Is your opponent trying to avoid hearts, or are they collecting them? Reading the table and adjusting your strategy mid-hand is what separates good Hearts players from great ones.
Several free online Hearts platforms exist, with CardsOnline and various dedicated sites offering solid browser-based experiences. Most support both AI opponents and real-time multiplayer. The game is perfect for casual play (each hand takes 5 minutes) and for longer sessions where you track scores across many hands. If you enjoyed Hearts on Windows back in the day, the online versions capture that same quiet, strategic satisfaction.
How to Play
Join a game
Visit a Hearts website, join a table with other players, or start a game against AI opponents.
Pass three cards
At the start of each hand, select three cards to pass to another player. Passing direction rotates each hand.
Play tricks
Players play one card per trick, following the lead suit if possible. The highest card of the lead suit takes the trick.
Avoid penalty cards
Each heart in your tricks costs 1 point. The Queen of Spades costs 13 points. Low score wins.
Or shoot the moon
If you take ALL hearts plus the Queen of Spades, every opponent gets 26 points instead of you.
Tips & Strategy
- Pass high hearts and the Queen of Spades early unless you are trying to shoot the moon.
- Keep track of which cards have been played — knowing the remaining high cards is essential.
- Lead with low cards to avoid taking tricks with hearts in them.
- Watch for opponents trying to shoot the moon and give them at least one heart to stop them.
