We Were Here
A free two-player co-op escape game on Steam. You are separated inside a castle with only a walkie-talkie, and every puzzle is solved by describing what the other person cannot see.

About This Game
We Were Here is the free first entry in a co-op puzzle series built entirely around communication. Two players are separated inside an abandoned castle and can only talk over an in-game walkie-talkie. One sees a room full of coloured symbols; the other holds the book that explains them. Neither can act on their own information, so the game is really a stress test of how well the two of you describe things under time pressure.
It is the pick most likely to convert a sceptic, because the base game costs nothing and the paid sequels are there if the pair wants more. The catch is the same as Escape Simulator's: it is a Steam download, not a browser room, and it is strictly two players. OPG does not host or sell it; the Play button opens its Steam store page.
How to Play
Both players install it
We Were Here is free on Steam. Both players need it installed before the session.
Pair up and pick roles
One player becomes the Explorer, the other the Librarian. You will see completely different things.
Use the walkie-talkie
The in-game radio is half-duplex — only one of you can talk at a time, which is part of the challenge.
Escape the castle
Work through the puzzle chain together, then move to the paid sequels if you want more.
Tips & Strategy
- Agree on vocabulary early — name the symbols out loud before you start guessing.
- Swap roles on a second playthrough; the two sides play completely differently.
- The in-game radio only carries one voice at a time, so let each other finish.
- Great as a pair activity inside a bigger event — run several pairs at once and compare times.
Pros & Cons
Pros
- Free base game with no strings
- Pure communication puzzle — no reflexes or gaming skill needed
- Paid sequels to continue with if the pair enjoys it
- Works well as a remote-team pairing exercise
Cons
- Exactly two players — no solo and no larger groups
- Steam download rather than a browser game
- Older graphics and a few rough edges
- Sequels are paid, so continuing costs money
